I think Phoenix is making this trade in the hope that Shaq will retire after either this season or the next one. If he retires after this one, they’ve basically traded for an expiring contract. If he retires after the next one, they still save money, since Marion and Banks would together have made more.

So, looking at it from the financial standpoint, instead of just letting Marion walk, they are just trading away a malcontent with an expiring deal for one of the all-time alpha males of the NBA with an expiring contract.

Of course, if Shaq insists on playing out his contract, then Phoenix lose the trade financially, but with the precipitous manner in which his career is declining, I think it would take a miracle for him to play past next year.

If Dallas also wants Shaq and is willing to give up Josh Howard, why not a three-team trade?

Suns get Howard, Mavs get Shaq and Heat get Marion and Banks.
I'd even take Jason Williams, too, to back up Nash (salaries may not work out though).

I'd take a younger, more polished, cheaper Howard than Marion, thouth the Matrix does posess many intangibles.
