The folks over at Suns.com had incredible access to Phoenix’s draft room during Thursday’s picks and came away with some interesting snapshots of the evening. You get the see Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak making a play for the Suns’ No. 48 overall pick while Steve Kerr and David Griffin are working the phones furiously to work a deal to bring Goran Dragic to Arizona.
And if there was any doubt that Robin Lopez was the player the Suns wanted, the first 10 minutes puts to rest any speculation about their desire to take him at 15, or even trade up to make sure they got him.
Check it out on www.suns.com. The video runs more than 20 minutes.

We’re all learning about this guy together, so here’s some YouTube.com highlights of Goran Dragic, whom the Suns are tickled with taking in the second round Thursday night.
Looking at these tapes, you can see that penetration to the basket, creating his own shot and finishing at the rim are strengths while outside shooting (you don’t see any on the highlight reels) and decision-making is a concern.
Here are a few highlight reels to take a look at:

The other player the Suns coveted, LSU forward Anthony Randolph, is headed to Golden State. Well, at least none of the other big names are left on the board, so Lopez looks like a more reasonable selection at No. 15. The pick will be official within minutes.

Well, that makes it official.
Rush goes to Portland, so Robin Lopez is heading to Phoenix unless Don Nelson decides to make a wild local pick for Golden State at No. 14. Rush is a good replacement for ex-Sun James Jones, who opted out of his contract a few days ago and left a gaping opening for a wing player with 3-point shooting range.
Phoenix liked Rush a lot; they looked into several possible deals to get him, but he’s on his way to the Rose City.

It was a long wait for Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless. He lasted until the 11th pick and winds up in Indiana, where the Pacers obtained another point guard, Toronto’s T.J. Ford, in a trade yesterday.
Teams looking for a point guard take note, Jamaal Tinsley is now on the block. But don’t expect the Suns to kick those tires; the guy makes $6.7 million, $7.2 million and $7.5 million over the next three seasons. He’s going to be hard to move.
Everything is shaping up for the Suns. Sacramento, Portland and Golden State don’t figure to be interested in Robin Lopez, so the field is likely clear for the projected backup to Shaquille O’Neal in the post.

The Suns’ top target is now officially Stanford center Robin Lopez. The question is whether the twin will be around now that the run on backcourt and wing players is coming to an end (Danilo Galinari to the Knicks at No. 6, Eric Gordon to the Clippers at No. 7, and Joe Alexander to the Bucks at No. 8), and the post players will start to go quickly. Lopez’s brother, Brook, should be the first to go and Charlotte might take him at No. 9

The Suns are still working to try to secure a second pick in the first round of the draft, but they won’t go beyond the 22nd or 23rd pick because the talent level drops off from that point. Calls to Cleveland and Washington haven’t gotten it done.
If that doesn’t work out, they might look at the first five picks of the second round in the hopes that one of the players they like will drop that far. Portland (two picks) and Seattle, who have done business with the Suns in the past, have a pick early in the second round as do the L.A. Clippers and Milwaukee. But that deal might have some contingencies, dependent on whether the player the Suns want is still on the board.

OK, so is just about everyone else. But with Kevin Love heading to Memphis, my mock draft is perfect after five picks. I mention this now because I envision a real car crash ahead, and this is the best time to throw a little Love my way!
No truth to the rumor that the Lakers have called and offered Pau Gasol to the Griz for Love. Best of luck with Love, Marc Iavaroni.

O.J. Mayo is on his way to Minnesota. And Seattle, stuck with the the No. 4 pick once Mayo wasn’t available to the Clippers, snatched up Russell Westbrook from UCLA to run the point for Kevin Durant in Seattle, Oklahoma City or wherever the Sonics wind up.
Memphis is on the clock. And it could be a Love-fest…

The Heat kept their pick and took Beasley, the scoring machine that will likely signal the departure of Shawn Marion from South Florida — if Miami can find anyone to take the Matrix and his $18 million salary. Maybe these two can co-exist on the same baseline, but it’s a little hard to imagine.
We expect O.J. Mayo to go to Minnesota next, and that would negate the proposed Seattle-Los Angeles trade that would have moved the Clippers up to the No. 4 pick.
